Caernarfon’s woes continued last night as they lost to Aberystwyth by two goals to one.
Aberystwyth Town 2 – 1 Caernarfon Town.
The Cofis have been on a very poor run of results since late November and, having won their last outing, a 3-0 victory over Airbus, hopes were high that the team may have turned a corner.
Unfortunately, the frustrations of recent weeks returned as Huw Griffith’s men failed to get going against the Seasiders at Park Avenue, and they failed to get the result they were looking for.
The match did not start well for the visitors, as Danny Gosset was the recipient of a late tackle in the first minute and, despite trying to shake the knock off, he was forced to leave the action in the sixteenth minute. By then, Aberystwyth were already ahead, after Arnison took advantage of Caernarfon’s inability to clear a long throw into their box in the eighth minute, pouncing on the ball and finishing past Tibbetts from close range.
Cofis captain Noah Edwards forced Aber keeper Turner into a smart save in the twenty first minute after he got on the end of a Joe Faux cross from the right, but the stopper did well to get his hand to the ball to divert it for a corner. Rob Hughes created a good opportunity for himself ten minutes later after he beat his marker on the way into the box, but he screwed his effort wide of the target from fifteen yards.
Town’s best opportunity of the half fell to Darren Thomas who found himself one on one with Turner but the keeper flew off his line and gathered the ball at the striker’s feet in the box.
The hosts bossed the opening minutes of the second period and could, and probably should, have been at least a further goal ahead as they went close on three occasions in quick succession early doors. Tibbetts puled off two excellent saves to deny Lewis and Evans, whilst the latter should have scored after meeting a John Owen cross at the front post.
Caernarfon substitute Rhys Alun Williams was proving a livewire up front for his new club, but his team mates were not making the most of his runs, and indeed Town were finding it difficult to enjoy much possession, although Joe Faux was looking increasingly dangerous on Town’s left flank. Unfortunately for the Cofis, Faux was sent off for a second yellow card offence in the seventy sixth minute as a free kick headed goalwards struck his arm, and from the resulting free kick, Niall Flint found the corner of the net with a low and well placed effort.
Rhys Alun Williams halved the deficit in the eighty ninth minute when he latched onto a long ball and, with Turner off his line, the striker found the net with an excellent finish from just outside of the penalty area. It was though a case of too little, too late, as the whistled soon blew on another defeat for the visitors.
So, another frustrating evening for Caernarfon, who could not quite manage to get going against the Seasiders and whilst they remain seventh in the Cymru Premier League, the Cofi Army will hope that their team can get out of its current funk as soon as possible and give them something to cheer about.
