No Fireworks from Cofis in Disappointing Defeat.
Caernarfon 0 – 2 Penybont.
With the sides level on twenty one points, this match promised a few fireworks but, despite an encouraging opening for Caernarfon, they mainly failed to ignite and once Penybont got their noses in front, they managed the action well and ran out worthy winners.
The Cofis sprinted out of the blocks at the start and should have gone ahead in the first minute after Darren Thomas and Sion Bradley linked well to put Fidel O’Rourke through on goal. However, the striker seemed to rush when give such an early opening and hit his effort directly at visiting keeper Alex Pennock.
The stopper did even better three minutes later when Bradley was put through and Pennock got the slightest of touches as he dived full length to his right to deflect the ball wide of his upright and for a corner.
With Town dominating possession, Penybont’s opener arrived unexpectedly after Noah Edwards hesitated on the ball and lost it to Raffell, who burst into the box and to the by line before finding an unmarked Nathan Wood, who struck past Tibbetts from twelve yards.
Joe Faux was clos to getting an instant equaliser for the hosts when he chances his luck with a twenty yard effort, but the ball flew inches wide.
Former Welsh international Shaun MacDonald tested Tibbetts with a twenty five yarder in the thirty fourth minute but the Town number one was up to the challenge, diving full length to his left to parry the ball away from his goal.
Caernarfon’s last opportunity to draw level before the break arrived in the final minute of the first period, after Darren Thomas was brought down on the edge of the area. Dion Donohue’s free kick seemed destined for the bottom left corner of the onion bag until Pennock pulled off another excellent save to deny the Town captain.
Noah Edwards went close again ten minutes after the restart after a powerful run from midfield but his low effort finished narrowly wide of the target, whilst Josh Yorwerth was immense at the back for the visitors, getting his head or feet in the way of most crosses into his box, mostly from Caernarfon’s right flank, where Thomas was working hard to try and create for his side.
With the Cofis enjoying the lions share of possession as they tried to get back on level terms, they always seemed open to the counter attack and this is precisely what happened in the seventieth minute when Reynolds found some space in Caernarfon’s half and finished his run towards the penalty area with a very good finish that beat Tibbetts from twenty yards.
In all honesty, despite their efforts, Caernarfon did not really look like getting back into the match, as Penybont kept a deep and disciplined shape that frustrated the hosts.
