Caernarfon Back to Winning Ways.
Caernarfon 3 – 0 Aberystwyth.
Caernarfon got back to winning ways last night with an ultimately comfortable 3-0 victory over basement club Aberystwyth Town, although they found it initially difficult to gain the upper hand against the Seasiders.
Back to lead the team out having missed the last three matches was captain Darren Thomas, whilst goalkeeper Lewis Webb was also available after illness.
To say that the match was a slow burner would be an understatement as first half highlights were few and far between.
The hosts worked hard to try and break down their opponents but Anthony Williams’ side was set up to frustrate the Cofis, and they were stubborn and workmanlike in their endeavours.
Most of Caernarfon’s best football in the opening period included Thomas, Sion Bradley and Zack Clarke, whilst veteran Marc Williams was back to his tenacious best in midfield. Thomas went close to opening the scoring as early as the fourth minute but his effort flew wide of the upright, whilst Adam Davies threatened in the seventeenth minute when he spun in the penalty area before trying to curl the ball into the far corner of the net, but he missed the target by two feet.
The Cofis finished the half strongly and Aber stopper Dave Jones was on hand to deny Ben Wynne and Clarke before Thomas sent a tenacious effort from forty yards just wide as Jones backpedalled.
The hosts dominated after the break, with Jones pulling off fine saves to thwart Dion Donohue and Bradley before the deadlock was finally broken in the fifty ninth minute after Clarke was brought down in the penalty area as he went for a Thomas cross. Referee Mr Pratt was immediately awarded the hosts a penalty and Clarke dusted himself off to put his side ahead from the spot.
Caernarfon were buoyant and Clarke should have done better when Thomas put his through on the hour mark but he could not manage any power behind his effort as he stretched. Two minutes later a Marc Williams shot was deflected wide for a corner and from this the hosts doubled their lead, Jones stopping a Cartwright header, and Town’s top scorer, Adam Davies, following up to score from three yards.
The Aberystwyth players seemed crestfallen and a third goal five minutes from regulation time by Louis Lloyd sealed the points for the Cofis.
The victory sees Richard Davies’ side currently placed fourth in the Cymru Premier League and they will be back at the Oval this Saturday to face Cardiff Met.
