Caernarfon were on the road on Saturday, for the fourth consecutive weekend and, in the grand scheme of things, they would have known that they could not afford to lose against top six rivals Penybont. Rhys Griffiths’ side defeated Town just a month ago and were five points ahead of the Cofis going into the match.
Caernarfon manager Richard Davies, who is still without the services of the injured Paulo Mendes and Zack Clarke and suspended captain Danny Gosset, seemed to tweak his side’s usual attacking formation for this encounter and it must be said that his decisions proved t be on the money.
The match began with the homes die on the front foot without really managing to put pressure on Cofi number, Connor Roberts, with his only meaningful action early when he comfortably saved a Kane Owen header.
Town were looking dangerous in attack although Sion Bradley was frustrated not to do better when his snap shot from a half clearance just inside the home penalty area sailed over the bar. The Cofi favourite soon set up Adam Davies with an excellent cross to the far post but the striker could not manage a clean strike and Luke Armstrong did well to get down to the ball and parry it away from his goal.
At the other end Roberts impressively denied Kircough on the half hour mark and the final opportunity of the half fell to Town’s Davies, who headed just over the bar at the far post as he met a Ryan Sears cross.
Davies was again close to opening the scoring for the visitors five minutes after the restart. A Phil Mooney delivery into the box was headed across goal by Sears, Davies headed goalbound but Kircough somehow managed to head the ball off his line and wide of the target. However, from the resulting corner Caernarfon went ahead when home stopper Armstrong could only parry a Iwan Lewis effort into a dangerous area and Kyle Harrison was quick to react to head the ball into the net.
The hosts seemed rattled by the goal and yellow cards were shown to two of their players within five minutes. Although ‘Bont tried to play with a bit more urgency Caernarfon’ defence were up to the challenge and were giving little away.
Davies again went close to scoring for Caernarfon with a stinging low effort that shaved the upright and, with six minutes remaining the Cofis gave themselves some breathing space with a second goal.
A long punt upfield from Roberts landed at the feet of Iwan Lewis in the home are and he squared the ball to Sion Bradley who still had plenty to do, but he was in no mood to let the opportunity slip and he dinked the ball over the advancing Armstrong to record his first goal back after returning to the club on loan.
It had been an excellent team performance from Caernarfon and despite the opposition manager’s assertion that it had been a case of smash and grab for the visitors it really was anything but that. A deserved victory for Caernarfon at a ground that has proved a difficult one for them in the past and they can now look forward to returning to their temporary home at Llandudno next week for a fixture against Briton Ferry.
