Cofis No Match for Nomads.
Connahs Quay Nomads 6 – 1 Caernarfon.
After the Lord Mayor’s show has never been more apt than when describing Friday’s disappointing defeat against Connahs Quay Nomads just seven days after a five star show against Cardiff Met.
Having lost at the Essity Stadium against the same opposition in the Welsh just two weeks earlier Caernarfon will have known what to expect from Neil Gibson’s side but, to be brutally honest, they were nowhere near switched on enough at the start of the match and found themselves three nil down after just eleven minutes.
The first setback happened just forty seconds into the match when Harry Franklin scored from close range. He doubled the score in the sixth minute after Town had lost the ball in midfield and he was put through by Noah Edwards, finishing from close range with his left foot. The same player effectively won the match for the hosts five minutes later when he got on the end of a Disney cross to head in from close range and secure his hat-trick.
It was a shocking start to the evening for the Cofis and it got worse in the twentieth minute when Town keeper Lewis Webb rushed out of his box to head away a long ball from opposite number Andy Firth, with Jack Kenny running directly into him. Webb was forced off due to the challenge and Kenny was probably lucky to have received just a yellow card for his efforts.
To be fair to Caernarfon, they had plenty of opportunities in front of goal during the first half, Darren Thomas seeing an effort saved by Firth in the fifteenth minute, whilst Zack Clarke went close I the thirty first minute after Phil Mooney had threaded him the ball, but the big striker’s powerful shot ended in the side netting.
Town’s substitute keeper, Tom Pritchard, pulled off a superb save to deny Ben Nash whilst at the opposite end, Firth again denied Thomas with a smart save. Manager
The hosts scored twice in first half injury time through Franklin and Kenny to make the score an embarrassing 5-0 at the break.
Caernarfon manager Richard Davies introduced Iwan Cartwright, Ben Maher and Gruff John for the second half and the substitutions certainly had an affect on the action as the Cofis made a fist of things in the second half.
Again, the visitors had plenty of opportunities to get on the scoresheet after the break, but unfortunately they could not manage to take advantage. Thomas chipped the advancing Firth in the seventy first minute but his effort sailed wide of the upright with the Nomads keeper stranded off his line.
Josh Williams added a sixth for the hosts two minutes later and, just to emphasise one of Caernarfon’s weaknesses on the night, Ben Wynne, Thomas and Cartwright all went close without finding the net and, with regulation time over, Louis Lloyd managed a consolation goal for Caernarfon when he finished smartly into the far corner after a clever pass from Adam Davies.
