Caernarfon run out of ideas against Met.
Caernarfon 1 – 2 Cardiff Met.
Cymru Premier League, 31st August 2024. The Carling Oval.
The Cofis were looking to kick start their season after four points from their first league fixtures as they faced Cardiff Met at the Carling Oval.
The visitors from the capital had stsrted the season well and they began the action in the same vein, enjoying plenty of possession early on and it was only the acrobatics of Town number one Stephen McMullen that stopped them going ahead in the seventh minute as he tipped the ball over his bar to deny CJ Craven.
Unfortunately for the hosts, McMullen could not repeat the feat just a minute later when Caernarfon failed to deal with a Reynolds cross and Matthew Chubb headed in at the back post.
Louis Lloyd was a constant threat on Caernarfon’s left wing and he tested Met keeper Alex Lang with an effort in the fifteenth minute that was hit directly at the stopper. He beat Lang three minutes later with a cross-shot that saw the ball skip against the top of the bar before going out of play.
The tricky winger posed more danger in the twenty first minute when he dribbled his way into the penalty area and was brought down in front of the referee, who had no hesitation in proclaiming a penalty. Lloyd picked himself up and gave Lang no chance from the spot and putting his side level in the process.
With both sides cancelling each other out for the remainder of the half it seemed that they would walk off for their half time refreshments level, but, with just a minute to go, the visitors won a corner and Town, who were down to ten men with Danny Gosset receiving treatment for an injury, failed to clear their lines from a free kick into the box and found the back of McMullen’s net from the edge of the area.
Morgan Owen went inches close to an equaliser just before the half time whistle but his shot whistled just over the bar with Lang stranded on his line.
The second period was very much a case of Caernarfon trying to go on the front foot in an effort to get back on level terms whilst their opponents kept a solid and disciplined shape as they contained the hosts quite comfortably for the most part.
The Cofis just couldn’t get any kind of tempo into their game and although Lloyd threatened on two occasions, and substitutes Matty Hill, Zack Clarke and Osian Evans seemed to provide them such much needed directness late on, it was not to be for the hosts, and Met held on for three points that saw them top the Cymru Premier League at tea-time.
