Cofis Advance in Welsh Cup.
Flint Mountain 0 – 4 Caernarfon.
The second round of the Welsh Cup took priority this weekend and Caernarfon entered the draw with a trip to Cae y Ccastell to face Flint Mountain.
The third tier outfit would have been fancying their chances of an upset considering the Cofis recent form, but Huw Griffiths’ men began strongly and, in all honesty, the tie was all but over after ten minutes, as the Cofis sped into a two goal lead.
The opener arrived after just three minutes when Fidel O’Rourke won a race for the ball and nicked it into the goal past the outrushing home keeper, Jamie King, who escaped with a yellow card after clattering into the loanee from Liverpool.
King was beaten again seven minutes later when Rob Hughes tried his luck with a long range effort that was too strong for the diving stopper, as the ball slid under his hands and into the left corner of his net.
The opening salvo from the Cofis had an affect on the hosts, who looked to have lost confidence as they tried to rally back, although it was Caernarfon who bossed possession and created most of the goalscoring opportunities.
Four minutes after the second goal, Marsh Hughes ran onto a Mudimu pass, but saw his effort cannon off the bar, whilst Gruff John was frustrated two minutes later to see his header fly inches over the woodwork from eight yards.
Town added a third goal in the thirty first minute when Delgado brought Marsh Hughes down in the box, and Rob Hughes stepped up to confidently put the penalty away.
The hosts were nothing but tenacious, and they could have pulled a goal back just before half time but Kyle Smyth’s goalbound effort was blocked.
The Cofis continued to dominate after the break and opportunities fell to Rob Hughes and Daniel Gosset, both who narrowly failed to find the target, whilst Calyn Spencer had a rare pop at goal for the hosts, which sailed over the bar.
Marsh Hughes finally got on the scoresheet in the seventy fourth minute after a Gosset free kick was headed across the six yard area by Ben Wynne, and the young striker was at the far post to put the ball in from three yards.
Wynne went close to a fifth for Caernarfon as the match closed but his effort hit the side netting.
The Cofis will be back in action next Friday as they take on Flint Town United in the JD Cymru Premier League.
